NJFX 2018: A Year of Milestones in Connectivity

Ryan Imkemeier Explains the Importance of Equipment Maintenance, Vendor Relationships, Electrical Distribution & Managing the Team

October 22, 2018

NJFX, the only CLS colocation campus in the U.S offering Tier 3, carrier-neutral data center capabilities with direct access to three subsea cable systems, marks a year of unprecedented growth, highlighted by the announcement that the latest transatlantic subsea cable system, HAVFRUE, will land at its Tier 3 CLS campus. HAVFRUE is just the most recent project involving NJFX that increases subsea capacity, North American and indeed, global connectivity.

“NJFX does something that no other facility can: provide a viable alternative for carriers and large organizations to design resilient network architectures and further ensure global networks stay operational,” commented Gil Santaliz, CEO for NJFX.

In addition to the HAVFRUE cable system consortium partners choosing NJFX as its landing point, a new cable directly connecting NJFX in Wall Township, NJ to Shirley, NY, owned and operated by Crosslake Fibre, was the first subsea cable announced between these two points to entirely bypass congested legacy routes in lower Manhattan. “With a total of three subsea cables, soon to be five, coming into its colocation campus, NJFX is rivalling any location in terms of having a vast amount of subsea cable capacity in one place, and a vibrant and growing ecosystem of submarine cables,” adds Santaliz.

Other milestone developments include large carriers choosing NJFX as an interconnection point to fortify and expand their communications networks. Earlier this year, Sparkle invested in half of the Seabras-1 subsea cable, terminating at NJFX and Sao Paulo, Brazil, and and in doing so developed a closed ring creating diverse routes and secure, high capacity networks to meet exponential bandwidth demand. The routes bypass two huge, single points of failure: New York and Miami. “Sparkle solved a problem that has plagued the industry for more than 10 years. The company now offers a complete, diverse wet route all the way down to Miami. Now someone in Ashburn, VA can reach the Caribbean without going through Manhattan. The company has also found a way to get to the Caribbean and South America and bypass Miami and New York – completely avoiding two traditional pain points,” stated Santaliz.

Similarly, Zayo can now offer low-latency connectivity from the U.S. to key financial centers in Europe, South America and Asia. Zayo has established a point of presence in the NJFX’s Tier 3 data center, providing direct access to the subsea cable systems and local fiber providers that terminate in the data center. “Our vision is to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for customers who want to trade globally, alleviating the need to work with different vendors in each region they are operating,” said Brandon Gouin, general manager of Spread Networks by Zayo. “The expanded global capability extends and strengthens our unique value proposition in the financial marketplace.”

Next, NJFX partnered with Windstream Wholesale to expand its core network into NJFX’s international landing station. The Windstream/NJFX deal will expand Windstream’s capacity to major data center markets. Windstream especially called attention to the impact the move will have on capacity in Ashburn, VA and the Newark, N.J./New York City metro area.

“This buildout with its connections to Wall Township, N.J., will provide enterprises, international carriers and content providers fast access from our coast-to-coast network to major subsea cable systems,” said Joe Scattareggia, executive vice president of Wholesale at Windstream Enterprise and Wholesale. “Our network expansion strategy also includes easy access to other international networks through our links in Texas and South Florida and to Asia Pacific cable systems on the West Coast.”

NJFX’s purpose built 64,000 square foot Tier 3 facility went live in September of 2016, with racing legend Mario Andretti on hand as the company started revving its engines. Less than one year later, it’s clear NJFX is speeding toward innovation. In 2017, the company announced a 48-acre campus expansion. The flexible site plan includes a new, 80,000 square foot data center and premium disaster recovery space that will sit adjacent to NJFX’s current Tier 3 facility – just 60 miles from New York City – with access to a plethora of global communication providers. The space will also be able to accommodate future independent cable landing stations and/or independent data centers.

NJFX is proud to provide diversity, security, low-latency and a vast carrier ecosystem. “Route diversity is paramount to telecom providers. Our rich carrier ecosystem without recurring fees for cross connects goes a long way to further ensure these providers aren’t single threaded and exposed,” said Santaliz. “We have demonstrated tremendous value to our customers with the ability to interconnect to major international subsea networks complimented by terrestrial networks in the U.S.”

Aqua Comms reports progress on their development of the North Atlantic Loop – Irish Sea & North Sea segments under survey

Aqua Comms reports progress on their development of the North Atlantic Loop – Irish Sea & North Sea segments under survey

October 15, 2018

DUBLIN –  Aqua Comms DAC (“Aqua Comms”), the operator of Ireland’s first dedicated subsea fibre-optic network interconnecting New York, Dublin and London, announces today its continuing development of the North Atlantic Loop. The owners of America Europe Connect-1 (AEC-1) and CeltixConnect-1 (CC-1) are building on its vision of efficient submarine infrastructure ownership through further investment to develop a resilient dual-path network across the Atlantic between North America and Europe.

Aqua Comms has previously announced America Europe Connect-2 (AEC-2) as its ownership share in HAVFRUE, a new transatlatlantic cable set to land at New Jersey Fiber Exchange (NJFX) and will connect New Jersey with Ireland, Denmark and Norway.  Aqua Comms will market its portion of the latest developments under the name CeltixConnect-2 (CC-2) for the new Irish Sea cable between Dublin and Blackpool, and North Sea Connect (NSC) for the North Sea cable between Newcastle and Denmark.  Combining these new subsea cable developments with existing systems owned and operated by Aqua Comms will create a resilient, ring-based infrastructure connecting the hubs of the hyperscale data centre industry in North America, Ireland, and Scandinavia as well as providing resilience for the UK.

The building of CC-2 and NSC will provide uniquely diverse, high capacity routes and ring topology between mainland Europe, the UK, Ireland and then onwards to the US. Leased and ownership services on these two new cables will be offered from all landing stations and from carrier-neutral, metro area Points of Presence (PoPs) in Dublin, Manchester, Newcastle and Esbjerg/Copenhagen, where the system will more than double modern fibre connectivity to Denmark, increasing the diversity and reliability of the Internet to the region.

The multi-million-dollar investment in the CC-2 cable will deliver enhanced resilience and capacity between Dublin and Manchester/London, and will provide open access, carrier neutral capacity to international networks for Ireland’s businesses, ISPs and telecoms operators. NSC is the first modern system providing diversity from the UK into Northern Europe avoiding London.

Survey vessels have started mobilisation for CC-2 and NSC, and within the next few weeks, detailed manufacturing plans will be confirmed with the already-selected contractor. The cables are planned to go live in late 2019.

“These are very exciting times for Aqua Comms. We are delighted to follow up on our previously announced development plans and are pleased that this real progress is now being made towards the launch of the North Atlantic Loop in late 2019,” said Nigel Bayliff, CEO of Aqua Comms.

NJFX Welcomes Subsea Cable On-Ramp for Google, Facebook

NJFX Welcomes Subsea Cable On-Ramp for Google, Facebook

Gil Santaliz

CEO

September 20, 2018

The Jersey Shore is becoming a major destination for your photos, status updates and Internet searches. A new trans-Atlantic subsea cable will land in Wall Township, ferrying European Internet traffic from Google and Facebook to the New York metropolitan area.

The HAVFRUE cable, which was announced earlier this year, will land at the NJFX colocation campus in Wall, the company said today.

The HAVFRUE cable will connect New Jersey and Denmark, with branch connection to Ireland and Norway. The project is backed by a consortium that includes Google, Facebook subsea cable specialist Aqua Comms and Norwegian fiber provider Bulk Infrastructure.

The project will build on the momentum for NJFX, which is part of a movement to build new data center capacity at the cable landings that tie the global Internet together.

Gil Santaliz, the CEO and founder of NJFX, said the new cable “furthers our goal to make New Jersey a strategic landing point for the world’s subsea deployments and serve as a major interconnection for global communications.”

“The HAVFRUE cable system represents one of the most significant cable systems to ever cross the Atlantic,” said Santaliz, CEO for NJFX. “We are proud to be a part of this new subsea cable system.”

Undersea telecommunications cables are now strategic assets in the growth of hyperscale Internet companies, with companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon emerging as key investors. As these cloud titans focus investment in cables and new routes, it has the potential to reshape how data flows across the ocean, onto the U.S. mainland, and into the cloud.

A group of data center companies are seeking to capitalize on this trend, investing in new data centers at the areas where the cables rise from the sea. Historically, cable landing sites have featured minimal infrastructure, perhaps a manhole near the beach where they come ashore and sometimes a small facility operated by the phone company or cable owner. From there, fiber routes carry the data to carrier hotels in major cities like New York or Los Angeles.

NJFX is the largest and most ambitious of these new cable landing projects, featuring a 64,000 square foot Tier III data center built next to a cable landing station operated by Tata Communications. The facility is about a mile from the ocean, and with 10 megawatts of power capacity, and could support as many as 1,000 customers, according to Santaliz.

Santaliz believes that as content providers and cloud companies seek new ways to move data around the world, it is creating new market niches for colocation and interconnection specialists. Similar projects are underway in Virginia Beach, Boca Raton in Florida and Moncton, New Brunswick.
NJFX already has four cable systems landing at its campus facility, including TGN1, TGN2, Seabras and the coming WALL-LI project from Crosslake Fiber, the only subsea cable to directly connect New Jersey to New York

HAVFRUE is designed to deliver superior speed and lower latency design, capitalizing on advances in subsea cable construction since the original cable building boom during the dot-come era. Santaliz says that as existing transatlantic systems start reaching their 20-year life cycle, the HAVFRUE design will gain an economic advantage over its older rivals.

NJFX Announces HAVFRUE Transatlantic Subsea Cable System will land at its Tier-3 CLS Campus

NJFX Announces HAVFRUE Transatlantic Subsea Cable System will land at its Tier-3 CLS Campus

September 18, 2018

WALL, NJ –  NJFX, the first and only carrier-neutral Cable Landing Station Campus in the U.S to offer Tier 3, carrier-neutral data center capabilities, announces that the HAVFRUE transatlantic subsea cable system will land at its colocation campus, in Wall, New Jersey. The HAVFRUE subsea cable will be constructed between New Jersey and Denmark, with branch connection to Ireland and Norway, by a consortium that includes Aqua Comms, Bulk Infrastructure, Google and Facebook. The consortium members selected to land the HAVFRUE system in New Jersey at the NJFX Tier 3 by the Subsea Colocation campus.

“NJFX welcomes the HAVFRUE cable system to New Jersey as it represents one of the most significant cable systems to ever cross the Atlantic,” comments Gil Santaliz, CEO for NJFX. “We are proud to be a part of this new subsea cable system as it furthers our goal to make New Jersey a strategic landing point for the world’s subsea deployments and serve as a major interconnection for global communications.”

New Jersey is already rich with subsea capacity, and as the other transatlantic systems start reaching their 20-year life cycle, the HAVFRUE design will start to make the economics of the other cables unviable. In just two decades, advances in subsea cable construction have resulted in HAVFRUE’s ability to deliver superior speed and lower latency design. NJFX has also collaborated with carriers to install diverse fiber to its campus supporting carrier diversity across North America with carriers such as Altice, Crown Castle Fiber, Epsilon, Windstream, Zayo and Zenfi.

With the HAVFRUE system, NJFX now has four cable systems landing at its campus facility, including TGN1, TGN2, Seabras and the only subsea cable to directly connect New Jersey to New York, WALL-LI.  The new HAVFRUE system joins other subsea cables on the NJFX campus that interconnect Brazil, the UK and Caribbean in a single building, making NJFX the only one of its kind in North America. The NJFX campus is dedicated for interconnections to global networks with actual physical subsea cables.

Remembering 9/11: Reflections on Innocence Lost & Industry Lessons Learned

Remembering 9/11: Reflections on Innocence Lost & Industry Lessons Learned

September 11, 2018

By Roy Hilliard, VP of Business Development, NJFX

Every year at this time, I think of the tragic events that unfolded on the morning of that beautiful September day in 2001. It seems like a lifetime ago, and just yesterday all at once. Everyone has a story to tell about where they were “when”. If you lived in the tri-state area, exactly where you were was pretty significant.  Most people I know have a tale to tell about their experiences in lower Manhattan or know someone who did. It’s a day we remember as Americans for the loss of innocence that most of us felt. It’s a time to reflect on the souls who were lost. And it’s a day that will mark the end of era in many sectors. From the way we get on planes, to the way we do business – the September 11th attacks changed life as we knew it.

When the planes hit, I led the AT&T international product management group responsible for International Private Lines, Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode, and Satellite services.  When everything transpired, we were tasked to try to see what resources we could utilize. My team directly supported the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Secret Service, and the State Department, which lost local connectivity and was scrambling. Most of what we could offer were satellite solutions from alternate centers, as much of what was local to New York city was equally offline with either physical damage, or local PoPs offline.  Much of the connectivity had to be pushed farther south, either out of Florida or out of government owned facilities.

I recall that my peer within AT&T, who worked on the domestic side, was lost when it came to NYC, even though AT&T had a strong network and options. The events of September 11th were just too catastrophic to possibly solve for everyone affected.  As the cleanup evolved and in a very ironic and difficult twist, we were able to install a 4M satellite dish on the roof of the Thomas Street AT&T PoP, to open more communication options for Europe.  I say difficult and ironic because the site was previously unavailable to provide service as the Twin Towers blocked the trajectory.  With both towers now downed by terrorists, the trajectory was clear for a signal. Overlooking ground zero from the roof is one of the images that I recall every year.

We have learned a lot since then. Telecommunications has changed dramatically as well. Now ubiquitous smart phones were still in their infancy in 2001. There are three things that I like to point to in terms of network security in the face of any disruption: diversity, resiliency, and redundancy.  Global solutions require a new level of interconnectivity.  Establishing access to interconnectivity hubs is how institutions will have the ability to safely control, monitor, maintain, and maximize the underlying network. By using these hubs in conjunction with advanced network orchestration, companies can insulate applications from isolation, vulnerability, and interruptions.  Institutions historically engineered multiple paths but were beholden to what was offered by carriers as to routes and diversity.  Much of this holds true today, however in the always on, always available climate, network design must get smarter for both the steady state and when systems are disrupted.  Flexibility to control and redirect the network needs to be the new norm.  The ability to do so comes back to having access to hubs that can maintain connectivity as well as offer alternate pathways.

As a recent example, NJFX played a key role in recovery during 2017’s active hurricane season, on standby to assist hubs in Puerto Rico and Florida struggling with power outages and capacity demands.  Being available with critical services after a disruption event is vital for clients. The 2017 hurricane season renewed the focus on preparing options in advance.  Entities and providers speak with us regularly about ways to ensure diverse, physical connectivity.

We will always have to worry about the next disruption, whether it comes in the form of a terrorist attack, a cyber threat or a natural disaster. But I believe as an industry we have learned, adapted and are more ready today than ever to address catastrophic events.
