NJFX Offers Fiber Hookup to Subsea Cables

NJFX Offers Fiber Hookup to Subsea Cables

September 16, 2015

The New Jersey Fiber Exchange, announced in January as a carrier-neutral data facility built at a global cable landing site, is launching its meet-me room facility within Tata Communications’s New Jersey cable landing site this week to let carriers connect to multiple subsea cables. The direct connection in New Jersey helps avoid the need for backhauling traffic to carrier hotels in New York City, which makes for more efficient traffic movement.

New Jersey Fiber Exchange (NJFX) is building a 64,000 square foot data center next to Tata Communications Ltd. ‘s global landing site, as it announced earlier this year as part of the NJFX-Tata partnership. The move is part of the growing trend of uniting data centers and colocation/interconnection facilities, driven by the rise in Internet-based video traffic and cloud services. It’s a major shift that’s part of the New IP and is affecting metro networks, in particular.

What makes this location unique, however, is the presence of the global subsea cables, carrying traffic from two continents — Europe and South America — that in the past would be backhauled into New York City to be connected to carriers. Now, the nine network operators who already have facilities at the New Jersey site can be directly cross-connected via the NJFX to international traffic, which can then be routed to any one of the many other interconnection sites, such as Chicago, Ashburn, Va., or New Jersey, says Gil Santaliz, founder and managing member of NJFX.

“We provide the carrier-neutral environment to be able to connect with each other,” along with the power and footprint typical of a data center, he explains. The cable landing station, which is literally where subsea cables touch dry ground, doesn’t have the kind of power facilities required for a data center and can’t provide the carrier-neutral interconnection to multiple carriers.

Direct connections to the subsea cable increases efficiency by eliminating the unnecessary movement of traffic to NYC, ahead of its original destination, Santaliz says.

NJFX expects to connect up to 200 carriers at its new facility, as well as provide data center space for caching data or content.

In this first phase, NJFX is allowing regional and national carriers to bring fiber in for interconnections with multiple subsea cables, Santaliz says. But going forward it will have a broader outreach to customers to do direct connections as well, and to connect with the broad range of subsea cables that come ashore on the New Jersey coast.

NJFX Founder Discusses Redefining Proximity with Direct Interconnection at the Cable-Head at Capacity Latam 2015

NJFX Founder Discusses Redefining Proximity with Direct Interconnection at the Cable-Head at Capacity Latam 2015

March 28, 2015

Backhauling subsea networks to data center facilities in major metros has been a common practice in the industry when it comes to obtaining close geographic proximity. However, today’s data and Internet access demands are placing added strain on these network transit hubs as operators seek faster, more optimal transport routes. Moreover, previous demand has driven up the cost of monthly recurring cross-connects in these facilities, prompting some companies to seek alternative locations and means of connectivity. This morning atCapacity Latam 2015, Founder and Managing Member of sponsoring company New Jersey Fiber Exchange (NJFX), Gil Santaliz, introduced the audience to a new perspective on data centers and proximity – the concept of interconnecting at the intersection of subsea cables connecting the US, South America, Europe and the Caribbean.

During his session, Mr. Santaliz described how telecom carriers, enterprises and content providers in Latam as well as across the globe could design and construct more efficient networks by interconnecting directly at the cable-head. In addition to enabling faster, reliable and more cost-effective delivery of content and bandwidth-intensive applications, the practice also eliminates recurring costs on cross-connects and empowers enterprise companies to have more control over their networks rather than rely on traditional backhaul solutions. To enable this concept, NJFX is launching the first Tier III carrier-neutral colocation facility that intersects where subsea cables from the US, South America, Europe, and the Caribbean meet at the easternmost edge of the United States in 2016.

The network interconnection point will be open to carriers, enterprises, carrier-neutral operators and cable companies It will also provide customers with access to Tata Communications’ global connectivity, built on the world’s largest and most advanced global subsea cable network.

Microsoft Buys Into US-Brazil Submarine Cable by Seaborn

January 31, 2015

Microsoft has agreed to buy capacity on a fiber optic submarine cable a company called Seaborn Networks is building between U.S. and Brazil.

Microsoft’s commitment assures the Seabras-1 cable system, in the works for several years, will be built. Once completed, the capacity will enable Microsoft to provide higher-performance services in Brazil and the rest of Latin America.

Larry Schwartz, CEO of Seaborn, said Microsoft would be the “foundational customer” for the system. “With their full participation in the system, it is clear that Microsoft is highly committed to delivering the best cloud experience and infrastructure in Brazil and all of Latin America,” he said in a prepared statement.

USD 290 million in senior secured commercial debt fully underwritten

January 30, 2015

Paris and Boston, MA, March 3, 2014 – Seaborn Networks and Natixis are pleased to announce that Seaborn has mandated Natixis, a major French bank, to act as sole structuring bank, underwriter and lead arranger for a fully underwritten USD 290 million senior secured project financing debt for the development and installation of Seaborn’s new subsea fiber optic cable system between commercial and financial centers of Brazil and the United States. Natixis is also expected to serve as COFACE Facility Agent and Security Agent for this project debt.

Seaborn’s new submarine cable project, known as Seabras-1, is a 40 Tbps, four fiber pair system extending 10,400 km between São Paulo, Brazil and New York, USA, with a branch landing in Fortaleza, Brazil. It will be the first direct route between São Paulo and the United States, with lower latency than any other competing system, and is also the world’s longest system to be fully deployed with 100 Gbps coherent technology.
